After retiring in 1997 as a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Iowa State University, Terry Smay reconnected with his life-long interest in photography, engaging in a variety of photo ventures related to diverse activities ranging from weddings to sailboat and bicycle races. In 1998 he and wife Sherry bought their first Winnebago and began to travel the Western United States.

In 2004 Terry established Motor Home Memories as a vehicle for displaying and marketing memorable digital images produced during these travels. Winters spent in Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico and summers fishing in Minnesota have immeasurably enriched the collection, as have annual treks to Idaho to visit family.
